Mack and Mabel
The Mill Studio
Director- Julian Woolford
Lighting Designer- John Rainsworth
My second Video Designer role was at the Yvonne Arnaud, in the Mill Studio. The show makes use of lots of archival footage and photographs of 1900’s film comedy. This included the Keystone Kops, Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand herself. Working on this show really helped me to get to grips with copyright law and what exactly you’re allowed to use within a video design. I especially enjoyed flexing my musicality when it came to editing together footage to go with one of the songs. We wanted every lyric to sync up with matching footage.
For this production I was also an ASM, which led to my time being stretched rather thin. If this hadn’t have been the case there is definitely sections in my design I would have fleshed out. Firstly, I wouldn’t make the transitions straight cross fades, and instead use something more in keeping with the scenic design by Lowri Evans. The projection surface was a film reel so I would like to have been able to explore transitions that look more ‘manual’, as if there is a film operator swapping reels.
